The sport received more recognition when the brand Ralph Lauren marketed the brand Polo as a new upscale line. The style guru Ralph Lauren is not only responsible for bringing the iconic polo shirt into everyday fashion but the whole aspect of polo lifestyle in to his home designs. You might recognise Ignacio (“Nacho”) Figueras Nacho is a professional polo player himself. Not only a great promoter of polo, he is also in demand for his ridiculously handsome face as a model for Ralph Lauren products including Polo Black.
Polo-playing supermodel Jodie Kidd and her brother Jack have all rubbed shoulders with polo Royalty Princes William and Harry (and it’s rumoured Meghan Markle would also like to try her hand at polo too!) and their father HRH The Prince of Wales. There are a whole host of actors who have swung their mallets for polo: Robert Stack (The Untouchables) and British actor Leslie Howard -famous for Pygmalion (1938) and Gone With The Wind (1939). Joan Crawford even participated in one match although she was much more comfortable sponsoring teams and living it up on the sidelines along with Ginger Rogers! Hollywood actor, playwright and screenwriter James Gleason was a fiercely devoted polo player in his spare time.
Other actors/celebrities who have taken up polo are Hart to Hart star, Stefanie Powers, Doug Sheehan of “Knots Landing,” Alex Cord, Pamela Sue Martin, Dorrie Forstmann, Barbara McQueen (Steve’s widow), Jameson Parker and Sam Shepard. More contemporary celebs hooked on polo include the How I Met Your Motherstar Neil Patrick Harris and TV reality star Katie Price.
The Celebrity Pre-Game match for the “Legend’s Cup,” a three-on-three polo tournament at Los Angeles Equestrian Center has drawn such celebrity riders as actor William Devane (“Phenom”), singer Juice Newton (“Queen of Hearts”), and former-Monkee singer Mickey Dolenz.
FACT: The famous Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel got its name because Will Rogers and his movie star friends (such as Douglas Fairbanks, Spencer Tracy, and producer Darryl Zanuck) used to play polo every week up at Will Rogers’ ranch home in the hills above Santa Monica. After the games, the gang would relax at the hotel’s lounge…
